I'm not very good at starting conversations with strangers, especially in real life. I'd like to meet some new people online first, preferably from different countries. Does anyone know a good place to start without feeling too awkward?

Personally, I think online conversations can feel less intimidating than approaching someone face to face. Start with a simple hello, ask a question, and don't put too much pressure on yourself.
