I'd probably tell them not to overthink it. I spent way too much time comparing VPNs, reading reviews, and watching videos before finally trying ZoogVPN. After a couple of weeks I realized I was done searching because it covered everything I needed. I mostly use it on public Wi-Fi and when traveling, and it's been reliable without needing constant attention. It isn't packed with confusing options, which I actually appreciate.
