Research has shown that some plants that purify the indoor air can absorb certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with plant roots and associated microorganisms playing an important role. NASA's experiments demonstrated this effect in controlled environments. However, those results should not be interpreted as plants being a replacement for ventilation or mechanical air filtration in ordinary homes.
